One of the harshest criticisms typically thrown at the DC Extended Universe is that it can be too dark with not almost enough humor or lightness.
The film ranked first in 10 other Asian markets with $41.2 million while the Latin America market contributed another $35.4 million to the worldwide box office total. Justice League was clearly an expensive movie to begin with, but the costs ballooned even further when significant reshoots took place over the summer, said to total around $25 million extra. So, roughly, Justice League would need to make around $450 million simply to hit the break-even mark (it's now at $281 million worldwide). The investment was hefty, but so was the return.
Justice League is not a flawless film by any means, but it does offer a good time to those looking for one. And yes, that's possible, but there are a few factors that point to a lack of longevity at the box office here.
That said, Justice League marks the latest divergence between the domestic and foreign markets. For example, Wonder Woman experienced a similar (though, in this case, expected) opening weekend but finished taking $821.8m worldwide. The film has opened to some controversy with a huge cap in critics and audience scores. Ten other Asian markets added another $41.2 mill. and Latin America brought in $35.4 mill. showing that overseas markets are still more dependable for a movie making back its money. Most CinemaScores are in the A and B range, but it's pretty heavily weighted-while a B+ may seem like a good grade, it's somewhat low considering the folks grading it jetted out to the theater to see this movie the first chance they got. Let's celebrate this fun Justice League movie by highlighting some of the funniest moments in no particular order.
Thor: Ragnarok followed at # 3 with $21.8-M in its 3rd frame for a domestic box office of $247.7-M.
The unfortunate problem is that while the camaraderie among the heroes is largely enjoyable, the threat that they face is as bland and colorless as the Doomsday-led climax of Batman v Superman. Imax chief bizdev officer Rob Lister told Variety this summer that the company would likely be able to crunch the numbers on this experiment by the end of the year, and at that point figure out whether it would be ready for a much more aggressive global roll-out. The movie is the fifth installment of its DC Extended Universe, aimed at duplicating the success of Disney-Marvel's interconnected franchises. "Justice League" didn't impress critics, but neither did "Batman v Superman" or "Suicide Squad", which still managed to earn $133.7 million out of the gates. Just as Cyborg (Ray Fisher) is made from a mix of human and computer parts, and is sometimes unable to control his/its worst impulses, so too does Justice League feel cobbled together from spare parts, with two different directors who have two very different sensibilities at the helm. The film, which has received mixed reviews, will expand into about 1,500 theaters Wednesday.
