Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Turkey's first lady Emine Erdogan on Saturday said that Turkey will continue its efforts to combat violence against women. As the world undergoes a seismic shift in response to widespread allegations of sexual harassment, teleSUR examines what the event means today.

According to UNAMA, one in every three women around the world has experienced physical or sexual violence.
Calling such violence a human rights violation, he said men need to hold themselves and their peers accountable for behaviour that threatens women's respect, protection and freedom. In 2012, nearly half of all women who were victims of intentional homicide worldwide were killed by an intimate partner or family member, compared to six percent of male victims.
Each year on November 25 the world marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, while for the next 16 days, from November 25 through to December 10 (Human Rights Day), the world will mark 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence to raise public awareness and mobilise people all over the world to bring about change.
Yet despite its pervasiveness, violence against women is not inevitable - and it is preventable. As a result, resources for initiatives to prevent and end violence against women and girls are severely lacking.
