The Lok Sabha would adjourn on the first day after paying tributes to three sitting members - Chand Nath (of the BJP from Alwar in Rajasthan), Sultan Ahmed (of the Trinamool Congress from Uluberia in West Bengal) and Mohammed Taslimuddin (of RJD from Araria in Bihar) who had died in the inter-session period.

Congress and BJP are in a tug of war over the delay in starting the winter sessions of Parliament for the last one week.

The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, headed by home minister Rajnath Singh, met on Friday to finalise the dates of the session.

"This will be a 14-day session, 25th and 26th December will be Christmas holidays", parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar said.

"We request and seek cooperation from all parties, including the Opposition, for smooth functioning of both Houses to make this session fruitful", said the parliamentary affairs minister.

The opposition had earlier alleged that the government was delaying the session on goal to avoid a debate on "scams", including the Rafale deal, during the Gujarat polls.

The upcoming session of Parliament is expected to witness heavy fireworks as the Congress would look to corner the Modi government over a range of issues.

Rejecting opposition criticism that the government wants to avoid parliament before the elections, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said the session will be held and it will be a regular session, not overlapping with the Gujarat Assembly election dates.

He had added that if the session spilled over to January it would not be considered as afresh session.

Replying to questions, Kumar said the issues of National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) and triple talaq are two very important issues.
