Damian Green has resigned as First Secretary of State, amid allegations that porn was found on a Commons computer in 2008.
He went on: "From the outset, I have been clear that I did not download or view pornography on my Parliamentary computers". The pornography was found on his office computer during a police investigation of government leaks.
A report by May's Cabinet secretary concluded Green had made misleading statements regarding his knowledge about the indecent images found by police.
He also apologised for making writer Kate Maltby, who says he made inappropriate advances towards her in 2015, feel uncomfortable.
Discussing his former colleague's departure, Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that Mr Green had lied was rightly sacked by Mrs May.
Retired police officer Neil Lewis told the BBC he was "shocked" at the volume of material and claimed he had "no doubt whatsoever" that it was accessed by the Tory MP.
Hunt, who is reportedly being considered as a potential successor to Green, said the prime minister had asked Green to resign "very sadly, and I know with a very heavy heart".

Sources close to Mr Davis said he had warned Downing Street against sacking Mr Green but in the aftermath of his forced resignation, sources close to the Brexit Secretary said he would not be resigning in protest.
But as prime minister she had to make sure members of her government abided by the ministerial code, the source added.
Damian Green, who was ousted as first secretary of state, maintains he did not use pornography on his office computers, but he agreed he had not been forthcoming in statements made about the matter in November.
Kate Maltby's parents, Colin and Victoria, said in a statement they were not surprised to find that the inquiry found Mr Green to have been "untruthful as a minister, nor that they found our daughter to be a plausible witness".
Ms Maltby is not commenting on Mr Green's resignation until she receives more details from the Cabinet Office.
They praised their 31-year-old daughter for her courage in speaking out about the "abuse of authority".
