Pho faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
The court documents don't reveal Pho's motive or anything he may have done or meant to do with the documents.
The DOJ says that Pho started taking documents home starting somewhere in 2010 and up until March 2015, when he was caught.
Although prosecutors working on Pho's case previously withheld many details related to his government work, in Friday's DOJ statement, prosecutors disclosed that he had worked for the NSA's "Tailored Access Operations" (TAO) unit, which focuses on infiltrating foreign computer networks, from 2006 to 2016. United States officials then banned the use of Kaspersky products on United States government computers.
Pho entered a guilty plea Friday for unlawfully retaining national defense information, the US Department of Justice announced. The chief executive of Russia's Kaspersky Lab, Eugene Kaspersky, says he's ready to have his company's source code examined by USA government officials to help dispel long-lingering suspicions about his company's ties to the Kremlin.
He worked on "highly classified, specialized projects and had access to government computer systems, programs, and information, including classified information", according to the agreement.
In the meantime, Kaspersky Lab is denying media reports that it helped Russian spies steal any classified NSA data.
