Feltman's visit comes less than a week after Pyongyang announced it had successfully test fired a new intercontinental ballistic missile that can reach the USA mainland.
United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman would arrive in Pyongyang on Tuesday from Beijing, where he met with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Li Baodong on Monday. It will be a wide ranging discussion.
The unusual visit by Jeffrey Feltman, which begins on Tuesday and runs to Friday, comes less than a week after North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile believed capable of reaching the US.
This is the first visit for a United Nations under-secretary to the DPRK since 2011.
Feltman, the UN's under secretary general for political affairs, arrived in China yesterday as Beijing is one of the few transit points to North Korea in the world. The launch heightened tensions between the North and the United States, highlighted by months of insults between the regime and President Donald Trump.

Feltman's visit comes after the outrage sparked by the Kim Jong-Un regime over its latest ballistic missile trial on November 28.
Pyongyang sent tensions soaring on the Korean Peninsula five days ago when it announced it had successfully test-fired a new ICBM, which it says brings the whole of the continental USA within range.
Dujarric said six U.N. agencies, with approximately 50 global staff, are represented in North Korea the U.N. Development Program, the U.N. children's agency UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the World Food Program, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the U.N. Population Fund.
