Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson, former Yankee and current ESPN television analyst Aaron Boone and former Yankee player Hensley Meulens, now bench coach with the Giants, also interviewed.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Friday night because the decision had not been announced by the team.

Former MLB player Aaron Boone as been tapped to be the pinstriped team's new manager and we've got 5 things to know about him.

Two months ago, the Yankees were one game away from reaching the World Series.

Interviews are over and the Yankees will pick between the six candidates who have already interviewed for the job - Aaron Boone, Hensley Meulens, Carlos Beltran, Eric Wedge, Rob Thompson and Chris Woodward.

That hire was first broken by The New York Daily News, and was later confirmed by ESPN.

Yankees reportedly tap Boone as new manager

Thomson, who had spent 28 seasons in the Yankees' organization, most recently as the bench coach, is finalizing a deal to fill that role for the Philadelphia Phillies.

"It's a great place to work", Cashman said.

In a conference call with reporters on November 17, after his interview with the Yankees, Boone said he would relish the high-pressure job of managing the storied franchise. "But I would also say that I've been preparing for this job my entire life".

Whoever gets the job will face huge expectations, which comes with the territory in leading the most storied franchise in American sports history under the bright lights of the NY media.

By blowing out his left knee in a January 2004 pickup basketball game, Boone accidentally started the A-Rod Era in pinstripes; trading for Alex Rodriguez became the Yankees' solution to their sudden third base vacancy.

General manager Brian Cashman, who traded for Boone down the stretch in 2003, recommended him as the manager to Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees' managing general partner.

Boone's grandfather, Ray, was a two-time All-Star infielder from 1948-60. "Being around great teams, great players, I've kind of lived this game". He has never managed or coached at any level. He had been at ESPN since his retirement as a player. "It's really a blessing", Bob Boone said. "Especially the last few years, I find myself managing games all the time and thinking about strategies and how I would handle different situations". He has worked at Newsday since August 31, 1998, and has been in his current position since July 5, 2004.
