I, Tonya makes for a cautionary tale about being too willing to join a lynch mob and jump to conclusions without knowing all the facts. I want to take a moment to remind everyone that Tonya was the first woman in the US and the second in the world, to land a triple axel. "Her adamant and final position is that reporters must sign an affidavit stating that they won't ask her anything 'about the past" or they'll be fined $25,000.
Tonya Harding is having a moment. Tonya Harding has passed the years in her own way and most recently turned up at the 2018 Golden Globes alongside the cast of I, Tonya, but Nancy Kerrigan, the victim-turned-Olympics-hero, had a much different path in the years since the infamous attack. Taffy Brodesser-Akner even noted in her superb New York Times profile of the disgraced ex-Olympic figure skater now known as Tonya Price that there were people in press screenings of the film who laughed during a beating scene. Working off a reality that is already pretty out there, I, Tonya presents a dramatic mock-u-mentary retelling of these real-life events, which leave eyebrows raised from start to finish.
"I did, however, overhear them talking about stuff, where, 'Well, maybe we should take somebody out so we can make sure she gets on the team.' And I remember telling them, I go, 'What the hell are you talking about?"
Morgan was quizzing the retired figure skater about her involvement on the attack when she threatened to end the interview. In the film, Harding alleges that her mother once threw a steak knife at her that hit her forearm.
Business Insider asked Rogers before the movie opened in December if he was motivated at all to get to the bottom of what Harding knew before writing the script.
"I would have coffee and sometimes I would put brandy flavoring in it", Golden said. She also founded the Nancy Kerrigan Foundation in 1999, which serves those with impaired eyesight. "It popped in my head [that Gillooly and Eckardt were involved]", she said. "You know how much that it had to have hurt". At one point, LaVona throws a paring knife into her daughter's arm.
Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding. — video still
What we have in "I, Tonya" is not a standard sports movie but the crazed crossbreed child of "Slap Shot" and "Goodfellas".
The Olympian told the paper she's been "busy" and it sounds like she's not been keeping up with all the hubbub that has thrust Harding back into the spotlight and earned her an invite to last weekend's Golden Globe Awards.
In a new interview with the Boston Globe, Kerrigan admits she has not seen the movie, and doesn't "really have anything to say about it".
But Golden, who was also featured in the ABC special, denied abusing her daughter. Despite her denial, Golden admitted, "I spanked her once with a hairbrush at a competition", but claimed that it was an isolated incident.
When it comes to Tonya herself, Robbie's performance is by necessity much harder to pin down.
Harding gained infamy in 1994 when her US figure-skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan, was clubbed on her right knee at a practice session for the USA championships. I've got my life.
