Mr Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un have been trading barbs throughout the US President's first year in office; Mr Trump called Mr Kim "Rocket Man" multiple times and the North Korean state news agency had called the US leader a "dotard".
The drills, relatively common between the two countries' armed forces, have repeatedly angered North Korea, which seems them as an act of aggression.
In his New Year's address, Mr Kim threatened he has a "nuclear button" on his office desk and warned that "the whole territory of the U.S. is within the range of our nuclear strike".
North Korea agreed on Friday to hold official talks with the South next week, the first in more than two years, hours after the United States and South Korea delayed a military exercise amid a standoff over the North's nuclear and missile programs.

Lambasting "failed "experts" discussing the matter as "fools", Trump questioned whether the two nations would have engaged in conversation had he not been "firm, strong and willing to commit our total "might" against the North".

"And I truly do believe that making it clear that all options are on the table; that, as the president has done, making it clear the United States of America has the capacity to defend our people far beyond anything North Korea could imagine; but also making it clear that if North Korea will abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile ambitions, if they will dismantle those programs, there's an opportunity for a peaceable solution", he said. "We have no intention of weakening our warning and surveillance".
Reuters reported that it was active Wednesday, with officials from the North placing a call to the South.
The development comes amid signs of a thaw between North and South despite tensions that have soared between the two - as well as between Washington and Pyongyang - during recent months over the North's ongoing nuclear weapons and missile tests.
