A charter plane crashed in Guancaste, Costa Rica, on Sunday, killing 10 American passengers and two Costa Rican pilots, the Costa Rican government said.
A U.S. State Department spokesperson told CBS News that they are aware of the crash and are monitoring the situation.
The ministry released photographs of the crash site, showing the burning wreckage of the plane.
The ministry also said later that 10 foreigners were passengers aboard the plane, which was flown by two Costa Rican pilots. According to Costa Rican authorities, 10 of those passengers were United States citizens.
Ten Americans flying from a vacation hotspot on Costa Rica's tropical Pacific coast died Sunday when the small plane they had just boarded crashed and burst into flames shortly after take-off, officials in the country said. The spokesperson would not confirm the nationalities of those on board.

Enio Cubillo, director of Civil Aviation, said the tourists travelling in the aircraft were staying in a nearby hotel.
The plane went down in a heavily wooded area.
