Cynthia Nixon, who played Miranda Hobbes for six seasons and two films worth of the New York City-centric Sex and the City franchise, said Monday via her verified Twitter account that she's running for governor of New York.
Nixon starred on "Sex and the City" for six seasons between 1998 and 2004.
"Governor Cuomo wants to eliminate New York's obligation to provide schools statewide with $4.3 billion in additional funding, including almost $287 million for schools in Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties", she said.
In the video, Nixon decries income inequality in a state that she says has "incredible wealth and extreme poverty" and the depressed upstate economy where she says half of all children are poor. "It can't just be business as usual anymore", she said. The New York Times reported earlier in the month that she was hiring political consultants ahead of a challenge to the beleaguered Cuomo. "I've never wanted to live anywhere else, but something has to change". "We want our government to work again on health care, ending mass incarceration, fixing our broken subway".
Hank Sheinkopf, a longtime Democratic Party consultant who has worked for Cuomo in the past, said Nixon will have access to people happy to donate to her campaign "and lots of angry people" who do not want to see Cuomo elected to a third term.
However, "The contest will likely become one of the marquee Democratic primaries in the nation, as Ms. Nixon is widely expected to challenge Mr. Cuomo from the political left".

Nixon has always been critical of Cuomo, who she called a "centrist and Albany insider" in a statement on Monday.
Her campaign website said Nixon won't accept any corporate contributions and will limit contributions from any individual or organization to $65,100 for the election cycle. "I'm a proud public school graduate, and a prouder public school parent".
According to The New York Times, Cuomo's name was mentioned 163 times during Joseph Percoco's eight-week federal trial.
"I'm not nervous about whoever runs", he told reporters in Manhattan.
Nixon has publicly voiced her opposing views on Cuomo's education policies in an interview on "The View" last April and in an op-ed where she compared him to President Donald Trump's Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos. Her announcement included a video of her with her family, including wife Christine Marinoni and their son, Max.
