After a week-plus of the National Football League free-agent machine whipping Saints fans into a frenzy with talk of Brees speaking with other teams and possibly getting to Wednesday as a full free agent, the news Tuesday (March 13) was a welcomed one.
"But for me", Brees said, "this was about putting our team in the best position to go win a championship in the next few years". The Saints appear to be one of the NFC's best teams and a true title contender in 2018. Brees, who turned 39 in January, passed for 4,334 yards and 23 touchdowns, with eight touchdowns, a year ago as the Saints posted their most balanced offensive numbers in several seasons. "And that's what we tried to do with the deal".

So, why hasn't Brees signed a new contract yet?
While Brees stays put, the man who helped break Saints' hearts in the playoffs is on the move.
A situation where Brees walked away from the Saints would have needed to be so profoundly screwed up that all bridges had been burned.
The 39-year old quarterback has been with the Saints since 2006 but he no longer has to throw for 5,000 yards a season. He is on pace to pass both Peyton Manning and Brett Favre in 2018 to become the NFL's all-time passing yardage leader.
