The officers in the town of Clinton, outside of Kansas City, responded to a 911 call where two women could be heard screaming in the background. The home that officers should have responded to was in Windsor, about 15 miles (24 kilometres) away.
Officers arrived at the home at 9.25pm and were fired on as they entered with the shooter then retreating inside, Lowe said.
Patrol information states the suspect began firing at the officers, killing Morton while also injuring officers Nathan Bettencourt and Nicholas Kasper. Two other officers are in stable condition and undergoing treatment for gunshot wounds - one in the arm and the other in the shoulder, he said.
By 12:30 a.m., authorities said, officers had entered the residence and found the suspect - 37-year-old James Waters - dead. The suspect was later found dead inside the home.
The women in the house at the time were not injured and were taken into custody. The county court has issued a warrant and set her bond at $25,000, he said. But the man continued shooting, wounding all the officers.
Widger met the officers outside the home and said nothing was going on at the residence.
It's not known why the officers were sent to 306 Grandriver in Clinton. Waters was the only person in the home.
Her relationship with Waters is not immediately clear.

Waters family said they're confused as they deal with their own grief of losing someone they loved, and the sadness they feel for Morton's loved ones. But the fact is they were in the act of committing crimes within that house. One of the wounded officers remained hospitalized Wednesday with moderate injuries.
Authorities said Waters was also wanted in for questioning in connection with a rape case.
The suspect in the shooting had been in and out of prison since 2000 for drug and resisting arrest convictions.
In November, Waters was arrested in Harrisonville for unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance. He has pleaded not guilty. In August 2017, Gary Michael, was fatally shot after pulling over a driver for a traffic violation.
Prosecutors will seek the death penalty in Michael's shooting, the Associated Press reported.
