President Donald Trump and his longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, asked a federal court in California on Friday evening to put Stormy Daniels' lawsuit against them on hold while the criminal investigation of Cohen proceeds in NY.
The Times reported that it was unclear what Trump and Cohen discussed during their call but noted it "could be problematic for both men, as lawyers often advise their clients not to talk to each other during investigations".
Mr Cohen has been under criminal investigation for months, federal prosecutors disclosed in a filing in Manhattan federal court in Friday.
"The SDNY is unquestionably conducting a criminal investigation, and a federal judge would not have authorized search warrants absent finding probable cause that federal crimes may have been committed", he added.
The claims came after Cohen's own attorney challenged the seizure of the documents, which include records relating to Cohen's payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

"Clearly, the prosecutors regard Trump and Cohen as potential co-conspirators", he said.

In addition to searching Cohen's office and hotel room, prosecutors also obtained warrants to seize material from his cellphones, tablet, laptop and a safe-deposit box, according to people briefed on the warrants. She has alleged that she had sex once in 2006 with Trump and was paid shortly before the 2016 election to keep quiet about it. Daniels claims Cohen's denials portray her as a liar and sued for defamation. The Times reports that his advisers "have concluded that a wide-ranging corruption investigation in NY poses a greater and more imminent threat to the president than even the special counsel's investigation, according to several people close to Mr. Trump".
"If a lawyer is involved with a client in a criminal conspiracy, the crime-fraud exception to the attorney-client privilege strips their communications of privileged status", he said, and if Cohen had incriminating items in his office, he's not shielded from liability, even if he's a lawyer.
A source familiar with the situation said Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel has accepted Mr Broidy's resignation. "He is the president of the United States", she emphasized at one point.
Early Monday morning, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents carried out a raid on the home, offices and hotel room of the president's longtime personal counsel.
In the Clifford case, Cohen and Trump on Friday filed a joint application requesting a 90-day stay of the action. Daniels opposes the request; her response to Friday evening's request is due by 6 p.m. PT Monday.
Searches of lawyers' offices are rare but not unheard of, and prosecutors use what is called a separate "taint team" to review the material and exclude any documents that are covered by the attorney-client privilege.
