"Sarah Hart and two of the children had a positive toxicology finding in their blood for Diphenhydramine, an active ingredient in Benadryl", the MCSO press release states.
The family of four - two parents and two children - was traveling from Portland, Oregon, to their home in Santa Clarita, California, last week when they stopped communicating with relatives.
A California Highway Patrol captain told the Associated Press that toxicology tests found Jennifer Hart had an alcohol level of.102.
The California Highway Patrol has also said the crash is thought to have been intentional.
Initially, Allman said the body was that of a child but the sheriff's office later corrected that it was a woman's.
This report will be updated.
Lab results on the driver's body found she had a blood-alcohol concentration above the state's legal limit of 0.08 percent, Sgt Powers said.

The 31-metre drop killed the women, both 39, and their children Markis Hart, 19; Jeremiah Hart, 14; and Abigail Hart, 14. Officials found no skid marks to indicate sudden acceleration or braking, according to a search-warrant affidavit.
Police also said the Federal Bureau of Investigation was sending its Behavioral Analysis Unit to study cellphone data recovered from one of the family members' phones showing the Hart family's travel information. "These items were of a personal nature and will not be described further at this time, but it does confirm the fact the vehicle that was seen going into the river was that of the Thottapilly family".
The bodies of Jennifer and Sarah Hart were found March 26 inside the family's SUV, which had crashed at the rocky shoreline below a cliff in Mendocino County.
A search team found the body about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of where the family's SUV fell into the rain-swollen Eel River last week, Mendocino County Sheriff Thomas Allman told a news conference in the community of Leggett.
"I have removed my child from that day care because she's afraid for her safety, and I'm anxious about her safety", Franklin said.
Late last month, the DeKalbs called Child Protective Services (CPS) with concerns.
