Environment Canada warns that Saturday night's storm will be followed by freezing rain on Sunday with "significant accumulations" possible.
Freezing rain is expected to end for a few hours on Saturday evening, with patchy freezing drizzle likely during the lull.
National Weather Service map shows area of ice storm warning in Western New York, with a winter weather advisory for the Southern Tier and most of New York State and a winter storm warning for the area around Watertown. The sloppy weather is expected to continue into Sunday until temperatures rise to above freezing sometime in the afternoon.
Environment Canada is warning that periods of raining starting Friday could change into freezing rain by Saturday morning as colder air moves in.
The weather agency says southwestern Ontario in particular is facing a "potentially historic ice storm", adding that freezing rain will likely lead to widespread power outages.

Disruptions to commerce and weekend activities are possible from the snow, ice and wind, especially from mid-Michigan northward.
"There remains considerable uncertainty with regards to how long the freezing rain will last before changing over to rain on Sunday", it reads.
As of this afternoon (Thursday), Environment Canada couldn't nail down exactly how much rain or snow we could get and what areas of Ontario would be affected the most.
Hydro One says it has crews ready to respond to outages 24/7, and additional resources are on standby this weekend.
