The e-commerce giant won the exclusive rights to show Premier League soccer matches in the United Kingdom for the next three years, it announced on Thursday.
It has now been confirmed that the USA company has bought one of those packages, with BT taking the other.
The agreement gives Amazon a package of 20 matches per season from the league.
But Sky said after the auction in February that it had paid £3.58 billion ($5.8 billion) over three years for its matches, while BT Sport paid a total of £885 million.
If prices remain as they are, it seems that the cheapest monthly cost of Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon Prime Video packages that cover all the live games will set you back £66.48 a month. It does similar with some live sporting events in the US.
That could open the door for Facebook or Amazon to strike a deal that would change the way football is watched in the United Kingdom, with the spiralling cost of signing up for television packages seeing a boom in fans watching matches on illegal internet streaming services every weekend.
