A report has found that cases of syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea have spiked for the fourth year in a row. "Ready? It is time that President Trump and Secretary [of Health and Human Services Alex] Azar declare STDs in America a public health crisis". "It's a crisis that has been in the making for years".
Gail Bolan, director of the CDC's STD prevention division, said doctors and patients need to discuss STD risks and testing more frequently. "Our nation urgently wants extra remedy alternate choices for gonorrhea", she says. Nationwide, gonorrhea cases jumped 67 percent between 2013 and 2017. Diagnoses among women increased for the third consecutive year from 197,499 to 232,587.
Syphilis diagnoses increased 76 percent, from 17,375 cases to 30,664 cases.
One big challenge with these diseases is most people who carry them don't have any symptoms, so they aren't aware when they're passing them along to sexual partners. Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD with nearly 1.7 million cases in 2017, up from just over 1.4 million in 2013. STDs affect individuals of all ages, but most of the new cases each year occur in 15 to 24-year-olds.

In recent years, gonorrhea has become resistant to almost every class of antibiotics, except ceftriaxone. Azithromycin has been used to stall resistance to ceftriaxone.
Cases of some STDs are on the rise in Pennsylvania.
But gonorrhea appears to be developing new resistance against azithromycin, raising concerns that the dual therapy approach could crumble in the future.
Ceftriaxone is the only antibiotic left in the world that is known to have any effect on gonorrhea.
