The county says this is the first bird to test positive for West Nile since monitoring began on May 1.

West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in New York City in 1999 and quickly spread across the country within a few years.

A Sussex County man has test positive for West Nile Virus.
Two earlier samples were found in Northfield earlier in July. It is spread through the bites of infected mosquitos; horses can not transmit the virus directly to people. There have been no reported human cases of the virus in the county this year.
"The best way to avoid mosquito-borne diseases is to prevent mosquito bites", states the DOH website. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all residents of areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of getting West Nile encephalitis.
