For their part, SC DHEC says the only reported case of West Nile in South Carolina this year has been in the Pee Dee region after a person became sick with the virus.
The county says this is the first bird to test positive for West Nile since monitoring began on May 1.

"Anything ... around your yard that is just a source of standing water that's not moving and isn't chlorinated like your pool is, you want to get rid of that water so you don't encourage mosquito breeding", Rigler said. Besides humans, the virus is also present in horses.
Kwit said healthy people might have come in contact with the West Nile Virus and might not even know it. According to the CDC, most people infected with EEE do not show illness.

A Sussex County man has test positive for West Nile Virus.
Two earlier samples were found in Northfield earlier in July. It is spread through the bites of infected mosquitos; horses can not transmit the virus directly to people. There have been no reported human cases of the virus in the county this year.
"The best way to avoid mosquito-borne diseases is to prevent mosquito bites", states the DOH website. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all residents of areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of getting West Nile encephalitis.
