In 2017, California's zero-carbon sources - including nuclear, large hydroelectric and other renewable generation - accounted for more than 56 percent of total in-state generation of electricity. Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 100.
Energy Storage North America (ESNA), the most influential gathering of policy, technology and market leaders in energy storage, applauds Governor Jerry Brown and the California State Legislature for passing landmark Senate Bill (SB) 100, which sets the largest-scale zero-emission electricity targets ever established for a US state.
At a ceremony in the state Capitol, Brown signed SB 100, by State Sen. In addition, the order sets a goal of maintaining "net negative emissions" beyond 2045, which means using plants or technology to draw carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, and reuse or store it some manner (see "Maybe we can afford to suck CO2 out of the sky after all").
In addition to that target, the legislation establishes benchmarks, requiring energy service providers to generate 50 percent of power from renewable resources by 2026 and 60 percent by 2030. In a poll in July by the Public Policy Institute of California, a non-partisan research organization, 67 percent of likely voters said they favored the 100 percent clean energy measure, and 21 percent opposed it.
Seeking to cement California's reputation as a global leader in combatting climate change, Gov.
"We are going to meet the Paris agreement and we're going to continue down that path to transition our economy to zero carbon emissions", Brown said.
Hurricane Florence to deliver 'life-threatening' surges and rain despite downgrade
North Carolina resident David Hoffman has heard all the mandatory evacuation warnings as Hurricane Florence gets closer. The storms path is promising to bring even more devastation than first predicted to the Carolinas and parts of Georgia.
Gasp! Twitter shook over Cardi B and Nicki Minaj’s messy fight
"It's insane for me that people always need to make Onika the bad guy", Nicki continued, referring to her real name. She clarified she has never and would never talk smack about someone else's parenting skills or child.
Miami Dolphins spent weather delay eating BBQ
The Titans and Dolphins have withstood multiple weather delays in this game, and there is still about one quarter left to play. Walker sustained the injury during the fourth quarter of the Miami game while he was looking to extend a play after a catch.
As of 2017, the previous year for which complete data is available, the state got 44 percent of its electricity from renewable sources, including 15 percent from large hydroelectric projects, just over 10 percent from solar, and 9 percent from wind power.
JERRY BROWN: California has been doing stuff most of the world is just hoping they might get to someday.
California utilities already get about a third of their energy from renewables, according to the California Energy Commission.
Brown's announcement comes ahead of a climate summit he is hosting this week in San Francisco that will draw local governments, businesses and investors from around the world.
To support energy storage deployments and greenhouse-gas reduction goals, two additional energy storage bills that complement SB 100 await Governor Brown's signature.
"We've reached all these great goals with renewables, but at the same time our families have paid the price with an increase in their electric bills every year", said Devon Mathis, R-Visalia, during the Assembly debate.
But electricity accounts for only 16 percent of California's emissions. We have the power to create the future that our children deserve - but only if we replace fossil fuels with clean energy by the middle of this century.
