Helene, a Category 2 storm, had sustained winds of 105 miles per hour in the mid-eastern Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center said in its latest update Tuesday. "It's going to destroy homes", said Jeff Byard, an official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency. At landfall, Florence will also slow down so flooding becomes the third threat. It could become a tropical depression or perhaps Tropical Storm Joyce and will likely bring rain to the Texas coast or spots west of the New Orleans area. With little wind shear to pull the storm apart, hurricane-strength winds have been expanding to 40 miles (64 kilometers) from the eye of the storm, and tropical-storm-force winds 150 miles from the center.
This week is the expected peak of hurricane season, according to forecasters, so seeing these active storms churning through the Atlantic right now isn't fully unexpected.
Forecasts call for between 25 and 38 cm of rain in the hardest-hit areas, possibly more if the storm stalls over land, as expected, Graham said.
A warm ocean is the fuel that powers hurricanes, and Florence will be moving over waters where temperatures are peaking near 85 degrees (30 Celsius), hurricane specialist Eric Blake wrote.
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for...
Although exact landfall between the two states is still unknown, the most likely hit is expected to be in southeastern North Carolina near the border shared with SC.
The largest U.S. Marine Corps base on the East Coast, Camp Lejeune and its extensive beachfront northeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, lie within the NHC's forecast "cone" for possible landfall.
"A storm surge of 2 to 4 feet above normal tide levels is possible near and to the north of where the centre moves through the Lesser Antilles".
We'll just have to wait and see where all of them go.
Still closer to Africa than North America, Hurricane Helene is predicted to head northeast in the Atlantic, then veer toward Europe, the center said.
Most hurricanes in the past moving into the Carolinas have moved north from Florida. Olivia should weaken through Tuesday but remain a strong tropical storm when it reaches the Hawaiian Islands.
She says the company is bringing in up to 2,000 workers from Florida and the Midwest to augment its 4,600 workers in North Carolina and SC.
But, she added, she's not sure whether going inland would be much safer: "I don't know where to go from here". "Already we're getting some overwash, the ocean is coming over 12", she said, referring to the islands' main road.
