Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, announced her resignation Tuesday in a move that President Trump said had been in the works for months, but which caught many White House officials by surprise.
At the U.N., Haley helped spearhead the Trump administration's efforts to combat what it alleged to be anti-American and anti-Israel actions by the worldwide body.
Haley's tenure as USA ambassador hasn't been without controversy.
President Donald Trump tweeted that he has a "big announcement with my friend Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30 a.m". "I just don't know who I'm fighting that day", Haley told Reuters earlier this year.
Elected as the state's first female governor in 2010, she was in her second four-year term when Trump picked her.
Haley has promoted a hawkish line on Iran and justified USA reductions in foreign-assistance funds. The U.S. also refused to sign the Global Compact on Migration, a set of non-binding rules for safe, orderly and regular migration.
Still, the prospect of post-midterm changes has loomed over the West Wing, and Haley's exit was one of those discussed, according to a senior administration official not authorized to publicly discuss private conversations.

Haley said she did not have any future plans set and did not give a reason for her unexpected departure, but Trump said she had told him some six months ago that she was thinking of leaving by the end the year "to take a little time off".
Her UN counterparts described her as charming and yet very tough.
Her condemnation of Iran was supported by Israel.
John Bolton. The current national security advisor had the title of USA ambassador to the United Nations once before.
As U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Haley traveled to Africa and Central America. She thanked the president, as well as first lady Melania Trump and the president's daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner, whom she singled out as a "hidden genius" who had done significant behind-the-scenes work.
She was also tough on Russian Federation. The president said that together, they had "solved a lot of problems". In April she announced new sanctions against Russian Federation but White House officials suggested they were premature. But Trump repeatedly has brushed off his White House's and administration's historically high turnover rate. Haley also made the point of attending National Security Council meetings and traveling to Washington, D.C., often.
